Myth TV, Tivo and more!

Tivo users and other DVR users everywhere know about the power of a good DVR system. I’ve long been a Tivo user, but there are just some things a Tivo can not do. And for that matter, myth tv CAN do those things. The problem is Myth Tv, while being a free distro and free to use, costs a lot in computer parts and a heck of a lot of time to setup properly. And if you aren’t good with linux, forget about it.

That’s where this next link got my attention, it’s a complete pre-built myth tv box, however it doesn’t appear to do video capture to begin with, you can always add that card. The question is, how many other pre-built solutions are out there like this? Considering a primary issue to me would be being able to stream video from a computer to the myth tv front ends around the house. This is the feature tivo lack that I want. If I download a video, I don’t want to have to burn a dvd to watch it on the home theatre system. What other devices are out there like this:

There are a few implementations I have seen. Xperinet at xperinet.com is a custom mythtv solution made for the custom installation market. Very pricey. The king of the hill is the kaleidascape system at kaleidascape.com. This one is a full on custom os, not mythtv. In the high end custom electronics worls, kaleidascape is king. I have the Xperinet and it really is great.
