Shadowmite getting a 700p
So I guess several users should be happy here. I’ve decided to get a 700p afterall and give a shot at custom roms for it as well as the linux port and a look at the wifi drivers. A user from Treocentral has been emailing me about some possible potential with the 700p wifi driver, and I’ll have to take a look myself.
The custom roms should be pretty simple once I have a device to dump and make a few changes. The linux port should hopefully follow along being pretty easy. James, from the IRC chat has created a palm os bootloader as well. So we should be able to make a lot of progress in the near future. Stay tuned!
Great another treo… and one as lackluster as the 700p 😛
I cant wait for morons to hit the forum and the chat and tell me that the 700p is far superior to modern WM5 devices because thats what shadowmite uses. If Jesus, Abraham Lincoln, former general “Stormin Normin” Swartzkoph, and Stephen Hawking all showed up at once all with treo’s clipped to their belts, I would still not think that treos were any better than how I think of them now.
I wouldn’t say it is better than any WM5 devices because Shadowmite has it. I have other reasons for it being better than any WM5 devices.
Two are, it is far more stable than any WM5 device I have ever seen (only crash I received that wasn’t my own doing, ie trying the WiFi drivers, was because I installed a BT keyboard driver and its preferences from my TX and the driver did not like the older preferences). Also, it is IMHO far easier to use than a WM5 device. Don’t get me wrong, I love the look of the new WM5 interface, but everytime I use it I get frustrated for two reasons: 1. Things are kind of scattered everywhere (some of the softbutton usage is not intuitive) and 2. When you hit the damn exit the stupid program doesn’t exit. Everytime you want to free up some memory you have to go [Start Menu]->[Settings]->[Memory]->[Running programs] and close it. Then sometimes that does not even help. The Palm Tre0 700p has a nice heap/DBCache manager. Unless some n00b programmer thrashes the heap with many small locker pointers the PalmOS can recover most of the memory on runtime. The Treo 700p is a major improvement over bugs regarding active memory in the TX.
Anyway, that is my opinion (I probably don’t know enough about WM5 to make a 100% accurate claim). Take it as that. The Treo 700p is the most stable (current) Palm device I have seen, and more stable than many WM5 devices that I have seen.

This is great news..!!! I have a Treo 700p and it does the job. It is more stable than the Treo 650, plus more memory, better BT, better camera and EVDO. Now, EVDO by itself really rocks. I can’t wait to see anything that shadow does for the 700p.
Go Shadow…!!

Awesome, but I hope this doesn’t mean you’ll stop wokring on trying to get those drivers working on the 650 now that you’re above us.
Have you discovered why the wi-fi drivers are taking over the network completely and not releasing it yet?
I have the Verizon 700p and I just put it on the Amp’d network. Phone works great as a phone, but I don’t get any data. The broadbandaccess is locked to Verizon. Would be great to be able to unlock it an use it on the Amp’d EVDO. Thanks for all the info on the site. It’s great!
if we can use wifi sdio on my treo 700p, you are god!
Dying to get this up and running without resorting to the sled – any news? 🙂
If you get the wifi sdio card working on the 700p you can sell that driver big time, similar to the people over at june fabrics who invented pdanet for using the treo as a modem hack.. http://www.junefabrics.com/palmnet/index.php
they made a killing, the market demands a wifi 700p hack. I would pay at least $50 for the driver/hack.
Any news? Is this dead? I can’t find anything!!!
Wi-fi for the 700p would be worth money to me too, ditto the $50 comment.
Or an idea on how to help out to make it happen.
