Cellular phones to go wifi!

Something I found out a while back and never really mentioned to everyone was that sprint had a gameplan to try and offer cellular service via your own wifi connection while you were at home. To do this, they need wifi in EVERY device they will be selling. Obviously, the pieces to put that puzzle together haven’t quite been available yet, but Kyocera is now releasing a new chip, which is basically “wifi on a chip”. With it I fully expect we might see this happen within the next year or so. Mainly it’s a advantage since your own wifi signal is far stronger than some home’s cellular signals. Thoughts?

Deutsche Telekom began offering this earlier in the year, and T-mobile has a current pilot in the northwest.

(requires registration I believe. I took a quick look at the t-mobile link cited, the show a Samsung phone, but I believe if you go to the DT site you might find several.

As far as I know, sprint has a trial set to start around december/january parnering with Comcast to deliver some cellular service, but I don’t have a lot of details about that currently.

Yea, wimax, its been covered on this blog several times. I just wonder what all those treo users are gonna say when that rolls out.

Wimax is not the same thing at all. We are talking about cellular over wifi. wimax is a newer standard that will run higher data rates over a different channel range. That is also in the efforts.
