Treo 680

It is going to be interesting to see what “low end” really means. Cingular is getting 2 new phones, the Treo 750v (a top end windows mobile device) and the Treo 680, a low end (budget) phone that runs Runs Palm OS 5.49106 (Garnet) and has a now standard 64 mb of ram. This isnt to say that PalmOS has fallen to “budget smartphone” status (you’d think that I’d say something like that though) but rather the treo 680 was designed from the ground up to be a cheap and flexible platform at a much lower price to bring in more casual consumers. This “no frills” phone looks like a treo 750v, even with the SD slot on the side, but lacks an IR port. Granted nobody really uses the IR port anymore but this is a first for palm since they first introduced the IR port as a great way to wirelessly transfer data. A 1.3 MP camera rounds out the package, leaving me wondering what seperates the top end treo 700p from the bottom end treo 680. As more details emerge the details of the pdaphone food chain will become more clear, but as it stands the treo 680 kicks the crap out of the GSM treo 650 and probably sits even with the treo 700p. There were a lot of online sources of data, but only this one had any real information.

You say the 680 kicks the crap out of the 650. maybe out the box but not a hacked one. its just got 64MB & thats nice but no big deal. I have many aps on my treo 650 like docs to go, Say it, Solved language translator, Java, Opera, File Z, TCPMP & Yishow in internal memory but still have 18.8MB free thanks to power run & Data Viz Tech Tool that allow me to run more apps from the card. also I’m using a 4GB SD card. so whats the big deal? help me out i just don’t see it. battery life is less. no IR. no chance of WI-Fi with a sled or a card. No thank you, ill keep my stripped down overclocked 650.

PS to date nothing palm has done will prompt me to buy unless its a palm OS with Wi-Fi. I’m in europe where the data plans way too expensive and a phone without wi-fi won’t cut it.

I completely agree that palm has been lacking in the wifi department, and if that is a biggie to you the 680 is not a good option until a sled comes out for it. However, the fact remains that for most users who just need a good phone, the 680 is quite powerful, moreso than the 650 by a little, and it’s a nicer profile.

Ok this is going to sound really stupid, but why can’t I buy a 680, plug a SD wifi card into it? Apparently you can plug the wifi card into a 700w, but that’s running windows which I’m trying to avoid.
